Sand filter, is a part of water treatment process, for water purification. Three main Sand filter techniques are used extensively, throughout the water industry. 1st; rapid (gravity) sand filters, 2nd; upward flow sand filters and 3rd; slow sand filters. The first two rapid techniques, sand filters and upward flow sand filters. Require the use of, flocculant chemicals to work effectively. The third technique, slow sand filters as the ability to produce high quality water. Depending on the strains it removes 90% to >99% pathogens, taste and odour without the help of chemical. Sand filter methods are used by, water treatment plants as well as singular households to purify water.

Sand bed filters separate particulate solids from fluids. The two types of filters are Surface filters and Depth filters. Surface filters, capture particulates on a permeable surface and Depth filters, capture particulates within a porous body of material.
